Mt. Biking: Sproughton to Felixstowe Wind Direction: NE Wind Stength: 6kts Surf / Sea State: Na Air Temperature: Hot Sea Temperature: Na Weather: Hot Max Speed: Average 13 Distance Covered: 36.5 mls (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Had planned to ride 60 miles today but the temperature didn't cool and was
way too hot. Must av been over 30C in garden. Switched to 40 mls as a safer
bet on my Focus Cayo 2.0 Carbon roadie. Drank half a litre be4 starting and
took 2 litres as normal which weighs a lot. In this weather I ride topless
which is great as the cooling breeze keeps it fresh and no probs in the hot
sun for me.
This was going to be a relax ride as I left at 3pm a bit late to avoid peak
traffic on the return leg. Just for training hit the first 10 miles in PB
about 50 mins around the 14 mph Mark which include a long slope hill on the
old Norwich rd as the 1k ascent towards Purdis Heath with Bob Marley and
the Wailers rythm for company as didn't meet any other riders. After using
a quiet road to tank up I realised had drank another litre so not enough
drinks left. I use the old Nacton village road from Purdis and at around 20
miles decided to have a pint at the ship in Levington as it was too hot.
The first draught Hamstel didn't touch the sides so it was same again which
gobsmacked the serve at the outside table waitress! This was going to be a
hard ride back for sure I thought. The big hill after the Ship at Levington
nearly got me as the smart helmet said app paused ffs as I crawled up out
of saddle but was determined I wasn't going to walk! Views over Levington
was spectacular but resisted the temptation to visit the mariner. Had to
sweat the beer out! Turned at the sausage shop round about at Trimley and
was hoping to keep up with a few riders heading my way but alas some of the
roadies are really fast riding in excess of 20 mph and they didn't look
young either, however none weighed over 100 kg so gave up as they vanish
out of sight. James Brown "get in the good foot" soon got me going towards
Ipswich old Felixstowe road my most mentally testing section as it's just a
hard slog. Couldn't face the loop and back up to Sainsbury in North Ipswich
so the new target was 36 miles. I was now 20 mins behind PB so decided to
pay attention to form in spinning using easy gears. HR was high at 120
guess that's what's 2 pints of larger does on a ride ffs. After moving my
saddle up 10mm it remove all the slight knee pain I was getting which is
amazing. In doing so I did increase wrist pain slightly as I loaded the
upper body. Another tweak of the handlebar at the Ship pub by changing the
angle slightly lower increasing the reach by a tiny amount resulted in no
wrist pain after an hours pedalling. Although a pro bike fit would be ideal
I think riding 3 hours pain free means I am definitely close to the perfect
fit. So using the core more at a resonable cadence is worth it but I
couldn't keep the shape for more than 20 minutes, as I started to relax too
much! Traffic was horrendous on the bypass but luckily heading off to
Henley I missed most it. Hammered down the old Norwich road hill hitting 29
mph on the new chain I fitted. Slog to Claydon Bramford then Sproughton
done me as the music stopped due to flat battery on the helmet. Not a bad
thing as the app was wearing me out remind me how far I was behind on best
times! Did burn 2425 cals but contra that with 2 pints of Hamstel draught +
a cold Sol bottle waiting for me in the garden! Great ride covering 36.5
mls in 2hrs 58 mins. Although I like windsurfing bike riding is so much
more reliable and much better cardio excerise. Am much fitter now than be4
my gym closed in March and it's all free! Max HR was 156 (too high norm
150) and average was 115 again normally around 110 so don't drink and ride
ffs!
